La Ola Rica

$$, Eclectic, San Francisco

User Rating: **** 4.4

Fodor's Review:

Oh. My. God. The food is good. Really good. Somehow chef and co-owner Gloria Honan (with Triny Palomera Gil) makes garlic-sautéed mushrooms (a huge portion) into a minor miracle on toast. The cream of poblano-chili soup is simply to die for: not too spicy, but wonderfully flavorful. And these are just the starters. The restaurant is understandably popular, and reservations are encouraged when there's live music, often jazz or Cuban. Locals come for the medium-crust pizzas; everyone laps up the lovely margaritas.

Amazing food

Posted by johndonk from San Francisco and Lake Tahoe on 3/8/07

Visited this place with my good friend, a very succcesful private chef. We were both blown away by the food - excellent, varied, and almost impossible to find elsewhere. We especially liked the ribs (amazing dry rub) and the molcajete (my favorite). We dined there 3 times in 6 days. Highly recommended. While you can normaly walk in and be seated, the choice tables are held by reservations. If anyone has any guesses on recipes approximating these dishes let me know - we've tried to duplicate the two dishes mentioned above but can't get it quite the same. Perhaps they can overnight ship entrees to the US soon LOL.

Five star restaurant in a quaint mexican village

Posted by Patrick from Seattle, WA on 1/20/06

My experience at La Ola Rica was awesome!! I discovered it on my second day in San Pancho and after that I ate no where else!! (Except on Sunday when they were closed). The food is exceptional, the staff friendly and attentive, and the margaritas are out of this world!! Thanks for making my vacation.

Walking attitudes serving dinner

Posted by Carlos from Puerto Vallarta on 12/18/05

We were first greeted and scorted to this nice table by a very friendly english speaking hostess. Then, this Gestapo-trained waitress arrived and everything went downhill from there. Not a good idea to allow arrogant waitresses around patrons. The vegetarian fajitas (with no tortillas) and the mahi-mahi should've stayed in the kitchen, but unfortunately, they were served 5 minutes after the pizzas. On the light side: the pizzas were good, but besides that, food is mediocre and there was absolutely no special attention from staff (except the hostess). Good luck!

It is a MUST DO!!!

La Ola Rica is wonderful in every way. The food is exceptional and creative. The atmosphere is lively happy but not too loud. Gloria and Triny are wonderful to their guests. While I am staying at Casa Obelisco the wonderful B&B in San Francisco, I always go to have dinner at La Ola Rica... many times!!! They have a menu that you just dont get tired of.

Salsa Night is a Blast

Posted by Judi from Healdsburg, CA on 10/7/05

In addition to having consistently great food, from their wonderful ribs, to Carne Asada to Coconut Shrimp; La Ola Rica has a fabulous Cuban band on tuesday nights for salsa dancing. It's a festive night, reserve early. The food never disappoints...always fabulous. Highly recommend this spot.
