When to Go

Oaxaca City lies in a valley at an altitude of 5,000 feet above sea level, and is surrounded by mountain ranges. The city's easy-going atmosphere is complemented by year-round spring temperatures. Evenings can be chilly, so make sure to bring a light jacket. The rainy season runs from July to October, with September being the wettest month. Generally you can count on clear mornings, with clouds and showers usually arriving in the late afternoon. The Oaxacan coast lies well within the tropics, so it's always hot and often humid.

In good weather, which you're likely to enjoy for at least part of your visit, among the best pastimes is exploring the outdoor treasures of Oaxaca, including shady zócalos and squares made for people-watching and relaxing; an expansive botanical garden; and numerous basilicas, colonial homes, and outdoor markets. On hot days, if you've had your fill of tequila and mezcal, seek out the closest ice cream vendor and a shady spot.
