Banks & Exchange Services

Banks are generally open weekdays 9 to 5; money-exchange desks have hours from 9 to 1:30. Automatic-teller machines (ATMs) usually dispense Mexican money; some newer ones also dispense dollars. ATMs at the smaller banks are often out of order, and if your personal-identification number has more than four digits, your card may not work. Also, don't delay in taking your card out of the machine. ATMs are quick to eat them up, and it takes a visit to the bank and a number of forms to get them back. If your transactions require a teller, arrive at the bank early to avoid long lines. Banamex and HSBC both have El Centro and Zona Hotelera offices and can exchange or wire money.

On Isla Mujeres

HSBC, the island's only bank, is open weekdays 8:30 to 6 and Saturday 9 to 2. Its ATM often runs out of cash or has a long line, especially on Sunday, so plan accordingly. HSBC exchanges currency Monday through Saturday 10 to noon. You can also exchange money at several currency exchanges; all are open weekdays 8:30 to 7 and Saturday 9 to 2 and most are located within two blocks of the bank.
