Museums / Galleries, Zona Hotelera
Fodor's Review:
This entrancing folk-art museum is a must for anyone interested in Mexican culture and handicrafts. Located on the second floor of El Embarcadero marina, this museum looks fairly small from the outside. But inside it is brimming with original works by the country's finest artisans, which are arranged in fascinating tableaux here. The collection represents all different regions of Mexico -- from nativity scenes sculpted out of Oaxaca's clays to the intricate arbol de la vida (tree of life) sculptures crafted in Metepec, Estado de México. Children will love the toy room, which includes an impressive display of alebrijes (dreamworld animals). In addition to the handicrafts, there are different scenes set up throughout the museum to give visitors an idea of traditional Mexican life. The mannequins used in these recreations, which include a church and a market setting, were actually modeled on real people that the museum director met during her trips through Mexico. Be sure to visit the museum's shop. Other marina complex attractions include the Teatro Cancún, helicopter tours, a small restaurant, and ticket booths for boat tours and other attractions.
