Fodor's Review

Begun in 1282 as another of Edward I's fortresses, Denbigh Castle is known as "the hollow crown" because it is not much more than a shell, albeit an impressive one. Set on high ground above the town, it dominates the horizon with its three-towered gate house. H.M. Stanley (1841–1904), the intrepid 19th-century journalist and explorer who famously located Dr. Livingstone in Africa, was born in a cottage below the castle.
