Among the mostly identical meyhanes along Nevizade Sokak, Imroz stands out for the freshness of its fish and its wide range of tasty mezes such as a creamy and smoky eggplant salad, the spicy cured-meat pastry pastirmali böregi, and the fried cheese dish called kasar pane. Presided over by the grandfatherly Yorgi Okumus, a Greek Turk, the restaurant is crowded and friendly, the cigarette smoke is thick, and the raki flows freely. It's one of the few remaining Greek tavernas in Istanbul—albeit with a Turkish menu. In summer the restaurants and bars on Nevizade have tables outside, giving the street an almost carnival atmosphere.
