Walking east from the square along Talat Pasa Caddesi brings you to the Eski Cami (Old Mosque). The mosque is appropriately named: completed in 1403, it's the city's oldest. The huge-scale calligraphy of quotes from the Koran and naming the prophets is exceptional in its grace and intricacy. Adjoining it is the Rüstem Pasa Kervansaray, restored and reopened as a hotel, just as it was in the 16th century.
Also alongside the mosque is the 14-domed bedestan (market), and one block away, the Ali Pasa Bazaar. Both are more authentic than Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, as the wares sold—T-shirts, coffeepots, hats, soap shaped like fruits and vegetables, towels, and household ornaments—are meant for locals rather than tourists.
