This large 11th-century former church is a few blocks inland from the water. According to legend, the Turkish name, Gül Cami, or the "rose mosque," comes from the fact that after the conquest the Turks found it filled with roses, left from the previous day of celebrations of the holy day of Saint Theodosia. Another legend has it that the last emperor, Constantine XI, is buried in the crypt.
