On a picturesque backstreet in Beyoglu's charming Asmalimescit area, this jewel box of a restaurant takes classic meyhane food several levels above the norm. The mezes, brought to your table on a large wooden tray, are all excellent. Standouts include cubes of fried eggplant in a yogurt and tahini sauce and Circassian chicken, a spread made with chicken and ground walnuts. Grilled fish and meat are also served. With Greek music playing in the background and photographs of old Istanbul on the walls, Sofyali has loads of charm. A limited menu is served during lunch.
