Book NowSumahan Review
What was once a derelict distillery on the Asian waterfront of the Bosphorus is now one of Istanbul's chicest and most original places to stay, with comfortable rooms and suites—all with incredible views of the water and decorated in a contemporary, minimalist style. Some rooms have fireplaces, while ground-level loft suites open onto a communal grassy yard; there's also an attractive hamam and cozy library. The hotel has a private launch that makes regular runs across the Bosphorus (complimentary, but reservations needed), but at night you'll need to take ferries or taxis to get back.

I returned last week for a five nights stay at the Sumahan with a friend and was disappointed that the service of this hotel has dropped. It is very obvious there is a management problem. Considering this is a hotel billed as a 5 star hotel charging 5 star prices:
The rug under the two single beds was dusty and obviously had not been vacuumed for weeks.
Housekeeping cannot differentiate between bath towels, floor towels and hand towels. We asked for hand towels because they were missing and were given floor towels. On other days there were no floor towels, but hand towels used as floor towels.
One evening when we returned the tissue cover was left empty on the vanity top as the staff had forgotten to replace a new box.
One day no fresh water bottles were replenished and after we complained this was rectified.
One day I returned with two boxes and left them at the reception to be delivered to my room. It only appeared 48 hours later after I called to enquire what happened to my boxes.
This time my friend and I shared a suite as rooms were tight in Istanbul during peak season. We wanted to give ourselves some space as we wanted to remain friends after five nights of sharing therefore we chose to upgrade ourselves to a suite.
First, the location of said suite was at the end of the building. To reach it we had to walk along a corridor, up a flight of stairs, along another corridor, down a flight of stairs. There is no alternative way. The porter had to carry the bags on the same route.
The bathroom of the suite was full glass with no blinds. There is no privacy. This is alright for a couple but for friends sharing it can be very awkward.
