Fodor's Review:

Owners Mark and Nedret Butler, both architects, took on the challenge of converting a derelict distillery built in 1875 into a luxury hotel on the Asian side of the Bosphorus; the result is one of Istanbul's most chic and original places to stay. On the water's edge, with an incredible view, the hotel—opened in 2005—has comfortable suites, all with water views and decorated in an unfussy minimalist style. Some rooms have fireplaces; ground-level suites open onto a grassy yard. The hotel has a private launch that makes regular runs across the Bosphorus, but at night you'll need to take ferries or taxis to get back. Pros: location on Bosphorus; stylish boutique hotel. Cons: far from sights and commercial center.

We were a group of friends with one child that stayed at this hotel in 2007. We all loved the hotel. Our room was a duplex where my husband and I slept upstairs and our child slept downstairs on a very comfortable sofa bed with his own bathroom. We had a French door that opened onto a garden with lavendar planted outside our window. The garden led to the Bosphorus. However, I would not recommend the hotel launch except for those who love water. We opted to walk 5 mins to the ferry terminal to take the very inexpensive ferry service. Also, if you plan to have dinner in the city every night then this hotel is not for you. After a day of sightseeing, you want to either go back to the hotel to freshen up or have dinner and make a quick return. Both not possible if you are staying at the Sumahan. If you are happy to eat on the Asian side then this hotel is lovely.
