With winding cobblestoned streets radiating from a square dominated by a 14th-century Genoese-built tower, the Galata neighborhood is one of Istanbul's most picturesque, least-touristy areas. The Anemon sits in the heart of it, in a meticulously renovated, century-old building just across the street from the Galata Tower. The atmosphere is elegant and Old World, and rooms are plush and comfortable. An upstairs restaurant, where breakfast is served, has wonderful views of the tower and the Golden Horn. Ask for a room away from the street to get a view and avoid noise. Pros: historic neighborhood; professional service. Cons: though safe, the area can feel a bit abandoned at night; some rooms small.
