In 2004 the Istanbul municipality took the area behind Taksim Square and turned it into a pedestrian-only zone lined with cobblestones. Since then, a growing number of hotels have sprung up here, all with the advantage of being near Taksim but not in the midst of the noise and commotion. One of the nicer (and pricier) options is the Central Palace, which has large, comfortable rooms decorated in a tasteful, if slightly ornate, Ottoman style: brocaded bedcovers, framed works of ebru (marblized paper), and gold trim. The large, marble-lined bathrooms all have Jacuzzi tubs, and some rooms have a foyer and/or small balcony. Pros: location right near Taksim and Havas airport shuttle; spacious rooms; luxurious feel. Cons: neighborhood is full of hotels, some of which cater to large tour groups; no alcohol served on hotel and restaurant premises.
