When twin sisters Esra and Hamra Teker opened the Hotel Nomade in 1984, few tourists stayed in Sultanahmet. Today the area is Istanbul's most popular, and the Hotel Nomade remains one of its most appealing and reasonably priced lodgings. A 2004 renovation saw the hotel redone in a stylish (though minimalist) modern-meets-ethnic design: the smallish rooms are painted pastel colors, there are patchwork kilims on the floor, and the bathrooms are lined with mosaic-like tiles. Service is personal and the roof-garden bar and terrace have enchanting views. Pros: interesting rooms; gorgeous roof terrace; located right near tram stop. Cons: small rooms and very small bathrooms; no view from most rooms.
