A member of the Merit chain, the Halki Palas was opened in 1994 after its predecessor, which had been built in the 1850s, burned down. The character of the old hotel has been retained, with white-painted wood and ornate eaves, and the result is an elegant atmosphere that is historic yet crisp and new. The rooms are large and airy, and many have great views, though some of the furniture is starting to show its age. It's one of the most restful hotels in the area of Istanbul, and though the island has few sights of its own, the Old City is only an hour away by ferry. You can dine at the poolside restaurant. Pros: elegant and peaceful. Cons: out of the way
