In a superb spot just above Dolmabahçe Palace, the Swissôtel was controversial when it was built—nobody liked the idea of such a large, modern structure towering over the palace. The views are magnificent, though: from the water all the way to Topkapi Palace across the Golden Horn. The vast, high-ceiling lobby has terraced levels that seem to cascade down to the Bosphorus and is usually filled with the sounds of a tinkling piano. The overall effect is that of a grand and elegant Old World hotel. Rooms have contemporary if undistinguished furnishings and original art on the walls; service is crisp and efficient. Pros: first-class service; extensive dining and fitness options. Cons: expensive food and Internet; hotel can only reached by taxi (or on foot); somewhat impersonal atmosphere.
