Galata Residence

Fodor's Review:

What was originally an apartment building built in 1881 for the Camondos, one of the leading banking families of the late Ottoman Empire, is now a very appealing residence hotel only a few minutes' walk from the Galata Tower. The large one- and two-bedroom lodgings are decorated with somewhat worn but comfortable period furniture, but they've also been discreetly supplemented with modern conveniences like air-conditioning and full kitchens. The size and price of the apartments make them an especially good value for families or multiple couples. Upper floors have wonderful views across the Golden Horn to the old city. Pros: good location; good arrangement for families. Cons: steep surrounding streets with stairs make hotel access a bit inconvenient; neighborhood is safe but rather abandoned at night.
