Van's most popular museum aims to highlight local Urartian heritage, especially its famous metalwork; the collection includes rich gold jewelry and belts and plates engraved with lions, bulls, and sphinxes. Other items are carved relief of the god Teshup, for whom the Urartian capital was named, and intriguing humanoid stelae found in Hakkâri, in the mountains to the south. As of this writing, the museum was planning a move to a large new building next to Van Castle.
