Despite its small population, Zürich is a big city when it comes to the arts; it supports a top-rank orchestra, an opera company, and a theater. Check Zürich News, published weekly in English and German, or "Züri-tipp," a German-language supplement to the Thursday edition of the daily newspaper Tages Anzeiger.
The venerable Schauspielhaus has a long history of cutting-edge performances—during World War II it was the only German-language theater in Europe that remained independent. Nowadays its main stage presents finely tuned productions, and experimental works are presented in the Keller (cellar).
The sister stage of Schauspielhaus Pfauenbühne, the Schauspielhaus Schiffbauhalle is home to large-scale productions in German.
During late August and early September the Theaterspektakel takes place, with circus tents housing avant-garde theater and experimental performances on the lawns by the lake.
