Petermann's Kunststuben

Fodor's Review:

Serious and clubby-chic, this is one of Switzerland's gastronomic meccas. Listed as one of Forbes's most expensive restaurants in the world, and set in an 1879 house with rooms replete with aubergine-hued walls, gigantic bouquets, Venetian glass lanterns, and modern paintings ("Kunststuben" means art studio), Petermann's is 9 km (5 mi) south of Zürich in Küsnacht, a village near Rapperswil. Though it's south of the city center, sitting on the lake's eastern shore, this formal restaurant is more than worth the investment of time and effort to get here. Chef Horst Petermann never rests on his laurels: the ever-changing International French menu may include scrambled eggs with truffles and foie gras, lobster in anise sauce, salmon with caviar crème, or Tuscan dove with pine nuts and herbs. The presentation here is fantastic, with ingredients so strikingly arranged on the plate you feel you should hang the main course on the wall, not eat it. On the small side, the restaurant nearly doubles in summer when you can book a table on the flower-fragant outdoor terrace.

  • Keep in mind: Reservations essential.
  • Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V
  • Closed: Closed Sun. and Mon., 2 wks in Feb., and 3 wks in late summer
