Zürich's most captivating hotel was created when 10 adjacent medieval houses were gutted and combined—now steel fuses with ancient stone and timeworn wood. Behind every door is a fascinating mix of old and new; a guest room could mix restored 17th-century frescoes and stone floors with a leather bedspread and halogen bell jars. Probably the most spectacular is Room 210 in the Haus zum Pferch, built circa 1300, which got a Baroque makeover in the 17th century. Modernists will cotton to Room 509 in the Haus zum Bankknecht, a bi-level aerie of glass panels and modern daubs that was once occupied by the city's butcher guild in centuries gone by. Set in the heart of Zürich's historic quarter, many of the houses look out into a communal courtyard, while others flaunt views of the Rennweg or the Augustinerkirche church. Four suites have private roof terraces; in the basement you can mosey into the wine cellar to sample and discuss the vintages.
