You could easily spend a full Swiss vacation in Vaud, flying directly in and out of Geneva's Cointrin Airport. You can move quickly into the heart of the region by car or rail. Visit the shore towns of Coppet, Nyon, and Morges; then dig into Lausanne's urban graces and crawl through delightful wine villages en route to Montreux. After exploring the castles and museums along the lakefront, head straight up into those mountains that have been looking over your shoulder.
The lake sparkles and clouds lift from Mont Blanc from spring to fall; November tends to be gray, then winter brightens things up above the plain. Crowds monopolize Montreux year-round but overwhelm it in July (jazz festival time) and August (Europe-wide vacations). It's worth aiming for concert season in Lausanne: from September through May. Prime ski time in the Alpes Vaudoises is from late December through Easter, and prices go up accordingly.
