Swiss specialties include handmade cuckoo clocks and music boxes, chocolate, wooden toys, beer steins, and of course, Swiss army knives and watches.

In Lausanne, the main shopping circle centers on place St-François, rue St-François, rue de Bourg, and rue du Grand-Pont. Less-expensive shopping can be found along rue St-Laurent and rue de l'Ale. Most of the watch shops are on place St-François.

There are fruit and vegetable markets in Lausanne along rue de l'Ale, rue de Bourg, and place de la Riponne every Wednesday and Saturday morning.

Place de la Palud adds a flea market to its Wednesday and Saturday produce markets and is the site of a handicrafts market the first Friday of the month from March through December.
