Place St-François (St. Francis Square)

Place St-François (St. Francis Square) Review

The stone-paved square is dominated by the massive post office and the former Franciscan Église St-François (Church of St. Francis), built during the 13th and 14th centuries. From 1783 to 1793, Gibbon lived in a house on the site of the post office and there finished his work on The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. In those days the square, now reserved for pedestrians, was a popular riding circuit.
