By Bus in Valais

As in other parts of the country, an efficient network of postal buses covers the region, even to the most remote hamlets, at least once a day. The bright yellow coaches pick up and deliver passengers at main rail stations like Martigny, Sion, Sierre, Visp, and Brig and transport them to higher destinations. Many travelers prefer the convenience of being dropped off in carless resorts and not having to navigate narrow, torturous roadways especially in icy and snowy conditions, not to mention paying additional parking fees at lots and garages. Schedules are available online and at all tourist offices. The buses are easily hailed at their regular stops marked with signage along the roadway or at village post offices. They are also a convenient way to return to starting points from long-distance hikes. Resorts like Verbier, Crans-Montana, and Saas-Fee with its contingent valleys have free shuttles that loop a circuit for skiers and snowboarders, as well as for summer guests.

In Sierre, in addition to the 12-minute funicular connecting the town with Crans-Montana there is bus service on the SMC (Sierre Mollens Crans-Montana) that winds its way through villages on east and west routes from the train station. It will add a half hour to your arrival. Access to St-Luc and Grimmentz is made via Sierre by switching to the postbus at the station.

A similar train-bus transfer takes place in the valley station of Leuk to get to the thermal village of Leukerbad. The LLB (Leuk Leukerbad) schedule is synchronized with SBB arrivals and departures and takes about a half hour. The fares and schedules for all of these connections are available through the SBB.
