Zermatt may be Switzerland's souvenir capital, offering a broad variety of watches, knives, and clothing. Popular folk crafts and traditional products include large, grotesque masks of carved wood and lidded channes (decanters) in pewter or tin, molded in graduated sizes; they are sold everywhere, even in the grocery stores of tourist-conscious resorts.
Zermatt's streets are also lined with stores offering state-of-the-art sports equipment and apparel, from collapsible grappling hooks for climbers to lightweight hiking boots in psychedelic colors. You'll see plenty of the new must-have walking sticks—pairs of lightweight, spiked ski poles for hikers to add a bit of upper-body workout to their climb. Although prices are consistently high, the selection is dazzling.
