Ticino Travel Guide

Planning Your Time

The important parts of the Ticino are all fairly close to one another, but depending on the amount of time you have, you might want to choose one or two home bases. Locarno or Ascona will allow you easy and quick access to the Verzasca and Maggia valleys and to all the sites and sights along Lago Maggiore. Lugano gives you fast access to the Lago di Lugano and the gems of Gandria, Morcote, and Campione. From Bellinzona, you will have good access to everything. And there's a lot to do if you want to. If not, you can enjoy long meditative walks in the mountains or along the lakes. Shopping in Lugano, touring the lakes by ferry, or hopping a funicular up a mountain, followed by a simple meal in a grotto, will give you some classic Ticinese moments. More active types will have lots of sports options available: skiing and snowboarding in winter, swimming, climbing, and golf during the warmer months. If you find yourself in need of a big city, remember that Milan is at most 1½ hours away by train from Lugano.
