Grand Hotel Kronenhof Review

A grand Versailles set amid mountain peaks, this breathtaking retreat was completed in 1898 and, happily, the exterior has changed little since. The lobby and dining rooms, with elaborate moldings, pink cherubs, and heavy chandeliers, are dazzling, especially the Rococo gold-and-gilt Grand restaurant, whose interior is fit for a king. Upstairs, the guest rooms are tastefully done with Biedermeier furniture. The lawn that sprawls out toward the Roseg Valley is a social center in summer and winter, with tennis courts doubling as an ice rink. While the Grand offers elegant international cuisine, the gorgeously wood-burnished Kronenstübli offers simpler regional fare: alpine macaroni with fried duck breast and liver, for example.
