By Car in Graubünden with St. Moritz

The A13 expressway cuts a swift north-south route through Graubünden. A car is definitely necessary if you want to explore deeper into the countryside. Fine valley roads connect the rest of the area, though to move from one resort to another you may have to crawl over a mountain pass. If you're traveling in winter, make sure to check the status of the passes beforehand. The San Bernardino old road and the Oberalp, Albula, and Flüela passes usually close, but the San Bernardino Tunnel and the Maloja, Bernina, Julier, and Ofen passes are usually open to traffic. Local road condition information is generally broadcast in German, French, and Italian, but you could also ask for the latest reports at the tourist offices. The Lukmanier is the only pass in the region that can stay open in winter. Trains through the Vereina tunnel shuttle cars between Klosters and Sagliains (Susch-Lavin). The tunnel has made the Lower Engadine quickly accessible during the winter, when the Flüela pass is seldom open. Tickets are between 27 SF in summer and 40 SF in winter. Cars can also be taken by rail from Thusis to Samedan via the Albula tunnel; the service is limited and reservations are essential. The cost per car is 145 SF.
