Skiing: Sporty to Snobbish

Skiing: Sporty to Snobbish

With Davos, site of the world's first ski lift, St. Moritz, arguably the world's ritziest resort, and a host of other hot spots within its confines, Graubünden has earned its reputation as an ultimate winter destination. You'll find downhill skiing and snowboarding for all skill levels, as well as miles of Langlauf (cross-country skiing) trails prepared for both the classic and skating techniques.

Sports shops can outfit you with the necessary equipment; in Davos and Flims-Laax you can even rent ski clothing. If you plan to spend a few days in one resort, check with local tourist offices for special packages. If you want to spend a day in a different resort within Graubünden, buy the lift ticket with your train ticket and the return fare will be nicely reduced. Remember that it was in Klosters that a fatal accident occured in the entourage of England's Prince Charles, whose group was skiing off-piste—an unhappy reminder to always avoid unmarked zones.
