Planning Your Time

Though the major sights themselves don't require too much time to visit, they are scattered throughout the region, so it takes a while to get to them. If you have only one or two days, try to take in one or more of the cities. Neuchâtel and Fribourg have very different characters, and a day easily can be spent walking around the city centers, visiting a few museums, and sampling restaurants.

If you cut out the museums, then each of these could be combined with a trip to one of the smaller nearby towns we mention. More time allows you to tour the area and take in its subtle differences. If you start at Fribourg, cut south to the castle at Gruyères, and from there, circle northwest through the ancient town of Murten on your way to Neuchâtel.

From Neuchâtel, head south along the Route du Vignoble (Wine Route) to the château town of Grandson and on to Yverdon-les-Bains. Or spend some time pursuing the many sporting opportunities that the different seasons and towns have on offer. Alternatively, summer is the perfect time to take a long trip on Lác Neuchâtel or to enjoy a hike.
