Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg

Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg Review

Just east of Brienz, a small road leads to the magnificent Swiss Open-Air Museum Ballenberg. Time-channeling centuries gone by, Switzerland's Williamsburg (although Old Sturbridge Village may be more like it), this outdoor museum village is adorned with 80 characteristic Swiss houses from 18 cantons. Dotting the meadows are 19th-century barns, gorgeous pastel-shuttered houses, antique lace-making shops, old Swiss haberdashers, and plenty of lovely old chalets. Most have been carefully reconstructed. Even the gardens and farm animals are true to type. Old handicrafts and trades like spinning, forging, and lace making are demonstrated using original tools, and many of the "re-enactors" are in period costume. The settlement—found between the villages of Hofstetten and Brienzwiler—ranges over many acres and you can easily spend a half-day here. On the other hand, it's not often you come across such a collection of magnificent old relics and abodes, so spend the day at what visitors have called "the perfect family outing." Via public transport, train to the Brienz station and then transfer to municipal bus.
