Palace Review

Towering over tiny Gstaad like Mad Ludwig's castle, this fantasyland burlesque packs a wallet-wallop. Although it cozily refers to itself as a family "pension" (albeit the largest in Switzerland), it has an indoor swimming pool with underwater music and water-jet massage, chauffeured Rolls-Royces, and oxygen cures, among other amenities. An indoor-outdoor swimming pool (with a glass floor placed on top for dancing on winter nights), tennis weeks in summer, and an elaborate health club are but a few of many compelling amenities. Conscientious travelers worried about missing out on the local experience, rest assured: the guest rooms are lavished with appropriately rustic touches, though you could play hockey in the sprawling tiled baths. The kitchen serves four lavish restaurants ($$$$), with renowned guest chefs conducting weeks of special cuisines from around the world. Be prepared for the steep 15-minute walk uphill.
