Matratzenlager Stocki
At a Glance
- great value for money
- some windows feature some of the most sought-out views in Bernese Oberland
Pros
- unless the peace, views, and socializing with other guests are top priority, you could feel that entertainment and facilities are definitely lacking—no TV, games, or bar
Cons
Matratzenlager Stocki Review
Set on one of the most enviable patches of real estate in the Bernese Alps—it occupies what might be called a front-and-center orchestra seat to the Lauterbrunnen Valley spectacular—this adorable hostel welcomes you with a Hansel-and-Gretel chalet exterior just steps from the Panorama Spazierweg trail. The million-euro views, however, are enjoyed by penny pinchers—this is a full-fledged hostel, replete with communal baths and beds (the dorms are lined with 10 double-decker beds all pushed together: get ready to sleep a few inches away from total strangers). Lending an eminently civilized touch to it all is Greti Graf-Feuz, the manager who speaks perfect English and has the bearing of a grande dame. Reservations are made by calling or through the tourist office. One word—fabulous.
