Set on one of the most enviable patches of real estate in the Bernese Alps—it occupies what might be called a front-and-center orchestra seat to the Lauterbrunnen valley spectacular—this adorable hostel welcomes you with a Hansel-and-Gretel châlet exterior on a quaint residential village street just steps from the Panorama Spazierweg trail. The million-euro views here at the "Mattress Warehouse" (which is the name's translation), however, are enjoyed not by the rich but by pennypinchers—this is a full-fledged hostel, replete with communal baths and beds (the dorms are lined with 10 double-decker beds all pushed together—get ready to sleep a few inches away from total strangers). Lending an eminently civilized touch to it all is Greti Graf-Feuz, the gray-haired manager who speaks perfect English and has the bearing of a grande dame. Reservations are made by phone or by contacting Lauterbrunnen's tourist office. The hostel closes every year from early November until the first snowfall of the season. All in all, a fabulous option.
