Berner Oberland tradition mandates charming chalet-style exteriors replete with scalloped-wood balconies, steeply sloped roofs, and cascades of scarlet geraniums, no matter what architectural era a hotel dates from. But many hotels in the region have interiors that reflect their roots in the '60s ski boom, with their no-nonsense, Scandinavian-spare, avocado-beige and walnut-grain Formica furnishings.
The prices we give for lodgings are average for the Berner Oberland; note that such car-free resorts as Wengen and Mürren run well above this curve, especially during ski season. Half-board, or demipension (breakfast and one hot meal), and full-board (three meals) plans are often the thrust of regional hotels. Remember that many properties post rates on a per-person basis.
