Basel is located in the Rhine Valley, which affords it an agreeably mild climate. Warm Mediterranean air also wafts this way from the Rhône Valley. The average temperature in January, the coldest month, is 1 Celsius (34 F); in July, the warmest, 19 Celsius (66 F). Fog is rare, unlike in other Swiss regions, and the average rainfall is the lowest north of the Rhône.
