At first glance the Grand seems like any other world-class international hotel, and in many ways it is. Its location is one of the best in the city, on the quayside just across the water from the Royal Palace; it boasts an impressive guest list of visiting political dignitaries, royal families, Nobel Prize winners, and movie stars. The service is slick, professional, and predicts your every need. The large rooms are sumptuous and decadent, with robes so fluffy, beds so soft, and antiques so lovely you may never want to leave. But the Grand offers something else: a touch of the uniquely Scandinavian. You can feel it in the relaxed atmosphere that pervades the hotel, you can smell it in the fresh, salt-tinged air that wafts through the open windows, and you can see it in the antique wood floors, pastel silks that drape the furniture, and the purity of the light that penetrates all corners of the hotel. If there is a more exquisite hotel anywhere in town, it is yet to be found.

The Grand Hotel was picture postcard peerfect with its red brick exterior and potted window box geraniums. The location was ideal for getting around Stockholm by bus, ferry, or by foot. Imagine our surprise when we checked out to find that breakfast for two people was not included in the cost (as indicated in the Fodor's review) but was an additional 500 kroner ( about $75)a day for two people. The hotel explained that when we booked thorugh Orbitz we had booked for lodging only without breakfast included. Next time I'll be sure to read the fine print more carefully.
