One of Stockholm's funkiest hotels burst onto the scene in 2003, causing as much of a stir among locals as its owner, pop group ABBA's Benny Andersson, did when he broke into fame in the early 1970s. Rival is cool, but never to the point of being cold. Rooms here are full of delightful ideas—such as the glass bathroom walls that let you watch the bedroom television from the tub—and have a stylish comfort about them. Overstuffed duvets compete with plump armchairs for your attention, while modern art and photographs on the wall and stylish lamps and fixtures delight the eye. Cold minimalism is avoided by the use of wood paneling and dark green or red velvet curtains. If you can tear yourself away from your room, downstairs you'll find a very cool bar, a restaurant, a bakery, and a cinema. Rival is a magnificent place to call "home away from home" while visiting Stockholm.

Stayed four nights at the Rival August 2009, and would definitely stay again if ever back in Stockholm. This is a cool boutique hotel in Sodermalm, the nieghborhood island just south of the Gamla Stan. The hotel overlooks a nice little park (pay extra for the balcony rooms - worth it) that fills with locals and their children in the evenings. There are a number of nice cafes within a five-minute walk where you can mingle with the locals and avoid the touristy spots The T-Bana station (a block away) will have you to the city center in ten. The lobby has a nice bar, and upstairs is a decent restaurant serving dinner nightly. Desk service was attentive and professional - the concierge, Sean, made a ton of reservations for us ahead of our trip, and even got us some tickets to a local soccer match.
