Göteborg is filled with people who love to eat and cook, so you've come to the right place if you're interested in food. The fish and seafood here are some of the best in the world, owing to the clean, cold waters off Sweden's west coast. And Göteborg's chefs are some of the best in Sweden, as a glance at the list of recent "Swedish Chef of the Year" winners will confirm. Call ahead to be sure restaurants are open, as many are closed in July or in other summer months.
Familjen's trendy warm red and green minimalist interior, along with friendly staff who manage its often-packed house with grace, both help make it one of the best restaurants in town for sampling rustic west coast–style cooking. Try its deconstructed take on the classic Swedish hash dish "Pytt-i-panna"—Åkatorp lamb with roasted potatoes and root vegetables, parsley, pickled summer beets, caramelized onions, a poached egg, and a nice dollop of anchovy butter.
Opened in 2012 in an old post office that's now a Clarion Post Hotel, Norda Bar & Grill combines American-east-coast style with locally sourced ingredients from Sweden's west coast. The menu, overseen by the superstar chef Marcus Samuelsson, includes such classics as porterhouse steaks, shrimp sandwiches, and Norda's special hamburgers, which are made with locally sourced beef, thick bacon slices, and hand-cut fries.
Arguably one of the best seafood restaurants in Sweden, this icon remains a leading champion of west-coast fish. In the delightful oak-beamed dining room, part of a 200-year-old renovated shipping warehouse, you can eat carefully presented, delicious fish dishes with a classical local touch. The outdoor terrace that opens up in summer comes complete with authentic sea air.
Klippans Kulturreservat, Adolf Edelsvärdsg. 5, Göteborg, 414 51, Sweden
Step down from the street into this former wine-and-cheese cellar to find an elegant restaurant owned by two of the best chefs in Göteborg. Finely set tables, flickering candles, and country-style artwork evoke the mood of a rustic French bistro. Italian and Asian flavors blend their way into the impeccable Swedish dishes; choose a five- or seven-course meal, or take your pick à la carte. Note that one of the best wine cellars in Sweden is at your disposal.
Stefan Karlsson's fantastic restaurant has one of the best locations in Göteborg, right on the beautiful Götaplatsen; from the semicircular dining room, diners looks out on the square. Almost-bare wooden tables and primary-color linens make an interesting informal contrast to the haute cuisine that emerges from the kitchen. All the herbs and vegetables are grown by a farmer just 5 km (3 mi) from town. Karlsson loves to travel; the flavors he has picked up as a globe-trotter spice up his modern Swedish menu.
A buffet of fresh shellfish and the fish dish of the day both draw crowds to this restaurant, which is on a balcony above the fish hall. You can watch all the trading as you eat lunch. The butter-fried herring with mashed potatoes and lingonberry is highly recommended.
Unashamedly Swedish flavors dominate the short menu here. On a rotating menu that changes about four times each year, you'll find the likes of a pan-fried catch of the day with pimento and mushrooms, or wild duck with a cream made of salsify, grated walnuts, and parsley. The restaurant is small (elbow room can be a little tight) and perfectly dressed in cream, beige, and brown—all bathed in soft candlelight. The staff are very relaxed and friendly; they like nothing more than to discuss the ins and outs of the night's menu.
The thoroughly modern Pinchos takes into account the country's love for mobile technology by allowing diners to place orders for tapas like fried calamari, bruschetta, and spicy chorizo using an app on their mobile phones. (You can also order the old-fashioned way, of course.) The bite-size plates include Japanese sushi, Lebanese mezes, Italian antipasti, Chinese dim sum, and a variety of Scandinavian plates.
An iconic restaurant since 1934, the Comet is a feel-good haven for celebrities and locals alike, who come to dine on simple yet delicious seafood fare and classic Swedish dishes created by the equally iconic chef and restaurateur, Leif Mannerström. Original paintings and chandeliers along with dark mahogany and red upholstery give it a 1940s saloon feel. You can't go wrong with its flaky panko-crusted cod—or any seafood dish off its menu, for that matter.
Opened in 2012, vRå serves extremely refined sushi and sashimi dishes using seasonal and organic seafood and other local ingredients. Be sure to reserve one of its coveted tables well in advance before visiting this tiny trendsetter, which is only open three nights a week.
