Guadalest
The ancient town of Guadalest, originally Moorish, perches impossibly atop a crag within the walls of a castle ruined in a 1644 earthquake. Because of the steep terrain, the tiny streets are stepped. To the north are splendid views over a large reservoir. The population is only 200, but this small perch is one of the most visited villages in Spain. People are drawn here for the seven museums in town and the one just outside it. The diminutive old town contains more than 14 micro-museums, with more opening each year. Guadalest is a world unto itself.
