The newest five-star addition to the city center, the Hospes has all the right ingredients to meet the demands of today's discerning travelers: an historic 19th-century building facing the Retiro park; vogue design that isn't overwhelming or uncomfortable, and is enhanced by elegant details such as iron columns, original moldings, and a restored main staircase; an interior patio turned into a deck; a superb restaurant with an emerging chef and one of the country's best sommeliers; and a spa with a two-page service list. Pros: Intimate and quiet, right next to Madrid's version of Central Park. Cons: Some rooms only have a shower and no bathtub; standard rooms don't face the park.
