This hotel is in the restored 18th-century building that once housed the Ateneo, a club founded in 1835 to promote freedom of thought. The spacious rooms are done in cream-and-light-wood tones with parquet flooring and red-and-gold-striped spreads on the bed. Exterior rooms have balconies overlooking the crowded street, except those on the fourth floor, which have sloped ceilings and skylights above the beds. Pros: Large rooms, free Internet. Cons: The street is a magnet for prostitutes and somewhat sketchy characters.
