Extremadura's paradors are remarkable, occupying buildings of great historic or architectural interest in all major tourist areas. The Extremaduran government runs a few hospederías, a sort of regional version of the parador chain; some have historic quarters in scenic areas. Most other high-end hotels, with a few exceptions, are modern boxes with little character. Throughout Extremadura's countryside are a number of charming bed-and-breakfast inns (hoteles rurales) and 135 guesthouses (casas rurales).
