The magnificent Parador Hotel San Marcos occupies a restored 16th-century monastery and jail built by King Ferdinand to shelter pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago; the bridge beside it has helped pilgrims cross the Río Bernesga for centuries. The huge, ornamental, plateresque facade also fronts a church and museum of archaeology. Hallways and guest rooms have antiques, high-quality reproductions, and some nice contemporary art. One wing is modern; if you want a more medieval look, ask for a room in the old section. The elegant dining room ($$$-$$$$) offers regional appetizers, as well as a selection of mains. Pros: Some call it the most beautiful parador in Spain, great restaurant. Cons: Large disparity in quality between the expensive and the cheapest rooms (this is the place to splurge for the good ones).
