Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos

Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos Review

For a sojourn with those masters of the Gregorian chant, head to the monastery where 1994's triple-platinum album Chant was recorded in the 1970s and 80s. Located 58 km (36 miles) southeast of Burgos, the monastery has an impressive two-story cloister that's lined with intricate, Romanesque stone carvings. Single men can stay here for up to eight days. Guests are expected to be present for breakfast, lunch, and dinner but are otherwise left to their own devices. If the monastery is full, try to drop in for an evening vespers service. It's a unique experience that's well off the tourist path.
