Museo Numantino (Museum of Numancia)

Museo Numantino (Museum of Numancia) Review

Nearly all roads to Soria converge onto the wide, modern promenade El Espolón, the location of the Museo Numantino. Founded in 1919, the museum contains archaeological finds rich in both prehistoric and Iberian items. One section on the top floor is dedicated to the important Iberian settlement at nearby Numancia that became famous in Spanish legend for its heroic resistance to invading Roman forces in 133 BC. As historical evidence has confirmed, Numancia resisted a lengthy siege, and its few survivors chose to take their own lives rather than fall into Roman hands. Even today, an ultradefensive soccer or political strategy is invariably described as una defensa numantina (a Numancian defense).
