  • Because part of the castle was destroyed in the Spanish Civil War, much of what's remaining is a neo-medieval replica

Fodor's Review

This mighty and fantastical 12th-century castle has hosted royalty for centuries, from Ferdinand and Isabella right up to Spain's present king, Felipe VI (both he and his father, Juan Carlos I, have hosted receptions here). Some of the rooms have four-poster beds and balconies overlooking the wild landscape; everyone has access to the stellar food served here, which is an essential part of the experience. At the leisurely lunch, your choices might include roast goat, pheasant, or cod with truffles and cheese.
