Canary Islands Itineraries

Go to the Canary Islands to relax, but dig a bit deeper once you're there. If You Have 3 Days

If you're flying in from mainland Spain, pick one resort, go directly there, and unwind. Tenerife is good for first-time visitors—Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas in the winter, Puerto de la Cruz in the summer. On your second day, rent a car and drive up to Mt. Teide, stopping at the historic town of Orotava and the Casa de Vino near Los Rodeos Airport. Spend the third day working on your tan. An indulgent alternative is to fly into Reina Sofía Airport and go to Los Cristianos, where a 35-minute hydrofoil ride can whisk you to tiny La Gomera for three days of swimming and hiking.

If You Have 7 Days

You can do two islands in a week. Begin your stay in Tenerife with an afternoon at the beach or pool. The next day, rent a car to explore the center of the island, visiting Mt. Teide and the town of Orotava. On day three, spend the morning in Santa Cruz and perhaps the nearby town of La Laguna. Stop for lunch or wine-tasting at the Casa de Vino, and in the afternoon explore the north-coast villages of Icod de los Vinos and Garachico. A 30-minute flight brings you to Lanzarote, where you can spend the next two days exploring the northern part of this island, with stops at the Jameos del Agua, Cuevas Verdes, Fundación César Manrique, and Mirador del Río lookout. On your sixth day, hit Timanfaya National Park for a tour of the volcanic zone. In the afternoon, detour to Playa Blanca and Playa Papagayo, at the island's southern tip. Save your last day for sunning and swimming.
