Architect Joaquín de Rucoba built this city hall in 1892, on the site of the San Agustín convent destroyed during the 1836 Carlist War. Sharing the Belle Époque style of de Rucoba's Teatro Arriaga, the Ayuntamiento is characterized by the same brash, slightly aggressive attitude to which most bilbainos confess without undue embarrassment. The Salón Árabe, the highlight of the interior, was designed by the same architect who built the Café Iruña, as their mutual
neo-Mudéjar motifs suggest. Tours in Spanish and Euskera, by reservation, are given weekday mornings at 9, 9:30, and 10.
