Fodor's Review

Although his fashion house lives on in Paris, the haute-couture maestro Cristóbel Balenciaga (1895–1972) was born in Getaria. This museum dedicated to his life is a must see, not only for followers of fashion, but for anyone who believes in the transformative power of design. Situated in achingly formal building adjacent to the Palacio Aldamar, its severe monolithic geometry is a fitting home for the "architectural" cut, drape, and form of Balenciaga’s astonishing,

hand-tailored creations. The collection gathers together 1,200 pieces of suits, gowns, and accessories that represent his life’s work. “Balenciaga is a couturier in the truest sense of the word,” said Coco Chanel of her rival. “The others are simply fashion designers.”
