In the village of Forua 1 km (½ mi) northwest of Gernika, Basseri Maitea is in a stunning 250-year-old Basque caserío. Strings of red peppers and garlic hang from wooden beams in the cathedral-like interior. Entrées include the pescado del día (fish of the day) and cordero de leche asado al horno de leña (milk-fed lamb roasted in a wood-burning oven).
